Access to clean water is the foundation of all development. For instance, schools cannot run programs if they cannot provide water to students, faculty and their families. Because so many children are sick from unclean water, they are often left at home. With the many additional burdens that a lack of clean water brings, education simply becomes less of a priority.

Coverage levels for water and sanitation in Ethiopia are among the lowest in the world. If we take the regional distribution the water coverage in Tigray is about 25%. Low levels of water and sanitation coverage also have important social implications. For girls, the task of carrying water combined with lack of sanitary facilities in schools often stands in the way of their education and traveling long hours to remote sources exposes girls to many risks.
